7 tips for hosting the perfect garden party

Hiring garden furniture for outdoor party

The British weather may still be wildly temperamental, but it’s never too soon to start planning those summer garden parties. After months of wind, rain and storms, what could be nicer than looking forward to those sunny afternoons and warmer evenings on the way! Think chilled cocktails, fresh and colourful seasonal food, and relaxing with friends while soaking up some long-awaited sun rays. Everyone loves a garden party, and hiring garden furniture is just one way to ensure the perfect alfresco gathering.  So read on to discover our 7 top tips for  a garden party to remember….

1. Cool cocktails and seasonal food

On a sunny day, it’s always nice to start an outdoor party off with a cool fruity cocktail, or some classic Pimms, garnished with lashings of seasonal fruit and fresh mint. Remember: nobody likes warm beer or fizz, so you’ll need somewhere outdoors to keep the drinks cool. For an informal gathering, fill large garden tubs with ice, and keep them topped up with bottles of beer, wine and  prosecco.  For a special finishing touch, why not hire some of our giant silver champagne bowls. When it comes to food, of course a barbecue is the obvious choice, but it’s not the only one. A beautifully presented cold buffet, or a traditional afternoon tea with mini sandwiches and scones can be just as nice. The food doesn’t have to be expensive, but good presentation can make all the difference.

2. Hiring garden furniture to create outdoor party zones

hiring outdoor furniture for a partyEveryone’s different; some guests love to sit and chat in groups, some love to wander and mingle, and some just love to chill out and relax in the sunshine! If you’re lucky enough to have the luxury of space, giving guests the choice of different party ‘zones’ can be a really great idea. An area for cosy lounge seating is easy to create with our modular rattan sofas. With five seating sections that can be arranged however you please, plus a matching low level coffee table, they are endlessly versatile. For those guests who love to perch at a high table, why not create a cool casual dining zone with our South Beach range of bistro furniture. Co-ordinating perfectly with our rattan sofas, they are both stylish and comfy. For those social butterflies who just want to mingle, take a look at our poseur tables. Scatter a few around your garden and guests will always have a place to pop down their Pimm’s whilst chatting with friends.

3. Set the mood with some themed decor

Flowers and scatter cushions at a garden partyWhen it comes to party decor, you don’t have to go crazy; for a small party you can simply create a kaleidoscope of colour with a beautiful spread of fresh seasonal food. But if you’re hosting a larger event and have a colour theme, adding floral arrangements can look lovely. Just make sure they are sturdy enough to stand up to the elements, and won’t blow over. Remember the general rule that any décor used out in the garden needs to be weighted down.  Paper decorations are usually not a good idea as they can flutter away all too easily in a sudden gust of wind. If you are theming your event in a specific colour, bear in mind at Rio Lounge we have scatter cushions and ottomans for hire in many different shades. Hiring these can be an easy and inexpensive way of bringing a look together.

4. Outdoor games

A garden party is the perfect excuse to have fun with some outdoor games. Hula hoops are always good fun for all ages; why not challenge your guests to a ‘hoop off’; see who can keep going the longest! It will bring out the competitive spirits amongst you, and you might be surprised by who gets involved! Lawn games are always a big hit too; croquet, for example, is a quintessentially English classic.  Or, if you have adequate space, some badminton racquets and shuttlecocks are always great fun, and less likely to cause breakages than tennis balls!

5. Be considerate to your neighbours

furniture hire for a garden partyOf course, if you’re hosting a party, then music is essential! However, bear in mind you must keep a check on volume levels, especially if the garden party is continuing late into the night. Especially true if you have neighbours close by. (Failing that, make sure you invite them to the party!!)

6. Take the stress out of clearing up

With single-use plastic being a real no-no in this age of environmental concern, you have a number of options. If your gathering is for a large number of people and you don’t fancy a lot of washing up, then why not think about good old paper plates and disposable wooden cutlery.  If you choose this option, remember to provide plenty of bins, so you’re not left with a big pile of litter to deal with at the end of the evening! Alternatively, why not think about a crockery and glass hire service, such as that offered locally to us by Jaspers

7. Have a bad weather backup plan

Whilst we all hope for sunshine and blue skies when hosting a garden party, we know too well that this is something that cannot be guaranteed!  Why not check our recent blog on how to rainproof your event, for some ideas on what to do if it happens to rain on the day of your party.
