Hiring Outdoor Furniture for Platinum Jubilee Celebrations
Celebrating seventy years on the throne this year, our incredible Queen is the longest reigning monarch in history. In commemoration of this, the nation has been granted a two day Jubilee bank holiday. Replacing the traditional May Spring Bank Holiday this year, the holiday is appropriately timed to coincide with the Platinum Jubilee. Although many will be enjoying some well-earned time off, that’s not the case in the events industry. Here at Rio Lounge, Jubilee weekend is one of our busiest, so putting our feet up is not an option. Not that we’re complaining, of course…. it’s great to be busy again! In this feature, we take a look at two key events for Jubilee weekend: The Epsom Derby, and the Bedford Park concert series. We’ve been hiring outdoor furniture to both events for a number of years.
The Cazoo Epsom Derby
Taking place this year on Jubilee weekend, the Cazoo Epsom Derby is widely considered to be the world’s greatest flat race. This year’s event is set up to be a huge celebration of Her Majesty’s 70 year reign. Being the owner of a number of thoroughbred racehorses, the Queen is a huge fan of horse racing. Also being the Jockey Club’s patron, she will of course be in attendance – together with other members of the Royal family.
Featuring two days of the finest quality racing, the Epsom Derby is a quintessially English institution. Of course, it’s not just about the racing. On the other side of the fences, it’s also a truly stylish, glamorous affair. Starting with the ever popular Ladies Day on Friday 3rd June, you’ll mingle with a younger crowd sporting the most cutting-edge trends. For the true fashionistas amongst you, there are even style awards bestowed on those sporting the most impressive outfits! Saturday 4th June is Derby Day, where the dress code is strictly formal. Think black or grey morning dress with a top hat for gents, and formal day dresses, or suits for ladies, topped off with the essential fascinator or hat.
So, if horse racing is your thing, why not check out our previous blog on Epsom Downs racecourse from 2019.
Bedford Park Concert series
As well as the Bedford Proms, held in late July, this year, the concert series has been expanded. The park will play host to two extra special shows over Jubilee weekend too. The first day kicks off with Coventry-based ska pioneers The Specials. Lynchpins of the Two Tone movement of the late 70s and early 80s, you’re guaranteed a show to remember. See them play all the classics, such as ‘Too Much Too Young’,’Ghost Town’, and ‘Nightklub’, as well as new material. Age really doesn’t seem to have affected their energy at all! They continue to make a statement against racism and political unrest that seems just as relevant in today’s world as it was then. Maybe even more so.
Contemporary music stars more your thing? Then get yourself a ticket to Day 2! Starring Bedford’s very own home-grown talent Tom Grennan, this local singer-songwriter recently hit the big time. Scoring his very first top 10 hit ‘A little bit of love’ in 2021, he’s certain to be on his way to superstardom.
